Transplantation of visceral organs has established itself over the years as a model of complex medical-surgical procedure applied routinely on a large scale. In particular, liver transplantation has been transformed from "impossible operation" into "standard" surgery according to well-codified techniques. Pancreatic transplantation has also found its space as a treatment of complicated type I diabetic disease.
The aim of the course is to illustrate the various medical-surgical aspects of liver transplantation and pancreas transplantation.
The following issues will be addressed: current indications, pre-transplant work-up examinations, management of waiting lists, organ allocation with donor-recipient match, immediate intra- and post-operative management (including the preservation of organs with ex vivo perfusion machines), surgical and medical complications, follow-up and long-term therapies, overall results with cost-benefit ratio. The concepts will be presented also and above all on the basis of the experience gained by the Turin Liver Transplant Center, which has reached almost 30 years of activity together with the goal of more than 3200 liver transplants performed.
