Lipid disorders are a relevant cardiovascuar disease risk factor. Recent evidence form clinical trials have shown reduced cardiovascular risk in patients treated with new powerful drugs. These evidences have stimulated the Scientific Societies to release Guidelines with reduced LDL-cholesterol targets; furthermore, new targets are being identified for effective cardiovascular prevention. The purpose of the present project is to pursue phenotypic and genetic characterization of lipid disorders in subjects in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention. The genetic analysis will be pursued with the continuining partecipation to the Lipigen (LIPid transport disorders Italian Genetic) Network, a project sponsored by the SISA (Società Italiana per lo Studio dell’Aterosclerosi) Foundation. The identification of the phenotype and of the genetic defect will allow to implement the most appropriate treatment, eventually trough a multi-step approach that could include the traditional drugs like statins, fibrates and ezetimibe, but also newer approaches like anti-PCSK9 monoclonal antibodies or anti-sense oligonucleotides. The phenotypic and genetic characterization will also allow to better evaluate the clinical response to the treatment.
