Proximal aorta dilatation occurs in 10% of hypertensive subject. The determinants of progression of aortic aneurysm are not known.
The biomechanical properties of ascending aorta were investigated only in the last decade and there is growing interest in order to identify new predictive parameters of risk of aneurism development and consequent clinical implications. Thus, today, functional study of aorta gain much interest. Available methods such as echocardiographic distensibility and cardiac MR study, are respectively controversial and expensive. The advent of strain and strain rate imaging in clinical echocardiography gave new parameters of dynamic evaluation of cardiovascular structures deformation (mainly applied to the left ventricle) with new techniques of image acquisition and analysis.
We will test a new non-invasive echocardiographic 2D speckle-tracking technique to evaluate aortic biomechanics in hypertensive patients affected by proximal aortic dilatation.
