Hypertension, aortic stenosis and valvular dysfunctions are the main causes of heart failure, a pathology with enormous impact on human health in the Western world. We are studying mechanisms of endogenous cardioprotection related to specific signal transduction pathways and to proteostasis using in vitro and in vivo approaches in the final attempt to settle new therapeutic interventions to treat heart failure. We are specifically interested in gene therapy approaches through the cardiotropic adeno-associated virus 9 and in the development of small molecules to treat heart dysfunction. In the last years we developed a deep interest in metabolic rewiring of the heart in response to stress and in the cross-talk among metabolism, inflammation and the onset of heart dysfunction. Ongoing projects are aimed at analyzing the response of the heart to mechanical stress and to anthracycline treatment in term of signal transduction, mitochondrial function, metabolic rewiring and immune cell recruitment.

The techniques used in the laboratory encompass isolation and cloning of genes, immunochemical analysis of gene products, signal transduction analysis in the heart, modification of gene expression in vitro and in vivo, generation of genetically engineered mouse models, mouse echocardiography and analysis of heart metabolism.
